These lists were prepared by the late Brian Presland, who passed them to the APS for publication but was prevented by his demise from clarifying the sources or resolving some of the ambiguities**. The information seems of value, and in the hands of specialist researchers will prove useful. Comments should be sent to the Webmaster.

HIGHER COMMANDS AND COMMANDERS - this list shows the primary higher commands of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and the officers who commanded them throughout WWI. The list shows the date a commander assumed and relinquished command and any promotion he received whilst in command

DIVISIONAL COMMANDERS 1914 - 1918 - the Divisional Commanders of the Austro-Hungarian Army, Austrian Landwehr and Hungarian Landwehr (Honvéd) from the outbreak of war until the final collapse in November 1918. Divisional Commanders in appointments prior to mobilisation in 1914 will still be shown as the Commander from the outbreak of the war.

CAVALRY DIVISIONAL COMMANDERS, 1914 - 1918: the cavalry are listed separately

CORPS COMMANDERS AND CHIEFS OF STAFF 1914 - 1918: the Corps Commanders are listed similarly to the Divisional Commanders.

** One obvious ambiguity is that the presentation of the names varies between the lists - eg you may find Lord John Smith, John Lord Smith, Smith John Lord and so on. The webmaster lacks the knowledge needed to enforce consistency, but would be delighted to hear from anyone who does.
