Introduction

The Royal Philatelic Society announced, in The London Philatelist (1985 vol. 94 (111-112) p.96), its intention to celebrate the centenary of its library, which fell in 1987, by publication of a bibliography listing the key reference sources for each country and subject. Austria, of course, is very fortunate in possessing a rich source of philatelic literature covering every period, from postal history and the Classical period through to the First and Second Republics. In view of this intention of the Royal to publish a major bibliography, it was thought apposite to produce an Austrian contribution dealing primarily with the published books; many of which have been mentioned or reviewed in 'AUSTRIA' and some of which are in the society library. Naturally, many of these standard reference books were written in the German language so, where appropriate, an English translation of their title is appended to facilitate a comprehension of their contents.

Although possibly more rigorous to list the books in their datable order of publication, it has been thought more convenient to arrange them by author: Austrian philatelic history is essentially that of the major collectors who impressed their characters upon it by communicating their knowledge to others through the progress of their erudite books.

The author would like to express his thanks to Mr. A.H. Godden, for many years the APS Librarian, for his help in compiling the list. The original annotated bibliography, published in AUSTRIA No. 74 (Winter 1985) pp.20-34, ended with a note inviting members to suggest any additions or corrections to it. In his valuable contribution, Dr. H.O. Pollak noted that it is necessary to adopt a definite position on two issues. The first concerns books whose interest is primarily historical, those whose content has been largely superseded by later publications. The second problem is that of defining what is a book. How fat does a pamphlet have to be before it counts? Does it have to have hard covers, must it be an original publication rather than a reprint from a journal or a Festschrift? Dr. Pollak suggests that if it existed as a separatum, it deserved consideration, regardless of hard versus soft covers. Dr. Pollak then noted that there were regions, such as registration labels and postal meters, that were not covered at all by the listing; the compiler can only plead his lack of interest in such areas. Mr. M.H. Brumby also made many useful comments for incorporation in this revision, and submitted a detailed listing of extra publications. The author would like to express his grateful thanks to Mr. R.A. Dehn F.R.P.S. (London), the eminent Italian specialist, for his considerable help in compiling the appendix dealing with Lombardy-Venetia.

1 The first author of any real importance was Hans Kropf (1856-1911) whose biography has been given in AUSTRIA No. 37 p.9. and No. 40 p.4. His reputation rests on three works:-

1.1 Die Abstempelungen der Marken von Österreich-Ungarn und Lombardei-Venetien (The Cancellations of the Stamps of Austria-Hungary and Lombardy-Venetia). Prague 1899. pp.162 + 71 tables. (APS Library No. 49)

1.2 Die Postwertzeichen der Österreich-Ungarischen Monarchie (The Postage Stamps of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy). Prague 1902. pp.445 + 7 plates.

1.3 Die Postwertzeichen von Österreich-Ungarn (The Postage Stamps of Austria-Hungary). Prague 1908. pp.447 + 33 plates.

2 The most renowned author in this field, of course, was Edwin Mueller (1898-1962) whose life has been documented in AUSTRIA No. 41. p.30 when a relatively full list of his writings was given. However, his main works are the following nine volumes:-

2.1 Verzeichnis der Abstempelungen; Österreich und Lombardei-Venetien. Ausgabe 1850 (Catalogue of the Cancellations of Austria and Lombardy-Venetia on the 1850 issue). Vienna 1922.

2.2 (with Dr. S. Mayer) Grosses Handbuch der Abstempelungen von Altösterreich und Lombardei-Venetien (Large Handbook of the Cancellations of Old Austria and Lombardy-Venetia). Vienna 1925.

2.3 Die Postmarken von Österreich 1850-1918 (The Postage Stamps of Austria 1850-1918). Vienna 1927, pp.xx + 427. (Reprinted in 1981). (APS Library No. 76).

2.4 Die Poststempel auf der Freimarken-Ausgabe 1867 von Österreich und Ungarn (The Postal Cancellation on the 1867 Definitive Issue of Austria and Hungary). Vienna 1930. pp.xlviii + 369. (The introduction and Hungarian listing only was reprinted in 1981). (APS Library No. 68).

2.5 Grundbegriffe der Postwertzeichenkunde (Fundamental Principles of Philately). Vienna 1938. pp.368.

2.6 The Pre-stamp Postmarks of Austria. New York 1950. pp.78.

2.6.1 This was republished with an appended catalogue as: Handbook of the Pre-stamp Postmarks of Austria. New York 1960. pp.199. (Reprinted in 1981). (APS Library No. 7).

2.6.2 Three supplements have appeared to the 'Handbook of the Pre-Stamp Postmarks of Austria': Karl Kühn: 'Erganzungsbericht zu Edwin Müllers Handbuch der vorlphilatelistischen Abstempelungen Österreichs' Vienna 1965. pp.17: 1975 pp.48; 1982 pp.72.

2.7 Catalogue of the Imperforate Classic Postal Stamps of Europe. Vienna 1958. pp.151.

2.8 Österreich Spezialkatalog - Spezialised Catalog of Austria 1850 to 1918. Vienna/New York 1952. pp.xxiv + 144 (11 tables). This was the 5th edition of a catalogue that had first appeared in German only, in Vienna during 1927. (APS Library No. 21).

2.9 (with Marc Fitch) Handbuch der Entwertungen von Österreich und Lombardei-Venetien auf den Freimarken-Ausgaben 1850, 1858-59, 1860-61, 1863 und 1863-64 (Handbook of Austrian and Lombardy-Venetia Cancellations on the Postage Stamp Issues 1850, 1858-59, 1860-61, 1863 and 1863-64). 2.10 Die Post wahrend der Kämpfe und der Volksabstimmung in Karnten 1918 bis 1920. Vienna 1931. pp.44.

3 The Nestor of Pre-Philately was Anton Kumpf-Mikuli (1879-1968) whose obituary will be found in AUSTRIA No. 12 p.64. (See also Die Briefmarke. 1968. (115) p.305). His main work was:-

3.1 Neue Briefe über alte: I Die Poststempel mit über 1500 Abbildungen nach Originalen (New Letters about old ones. I The postal cancellations with over 1500 illustrations after the originals). Vienna. 1933. pp.242.

4 Another important author in this field was the Englishman Philipp F. de Frank (1891-1954) an appreciation of whom appeared in AUSTRIA No. 63. p.35. His fame also rests on one work only, which was so important that it was translated into both German and Czech:-

4.1 Something New about Something Old, The First Issue of Austria and Lombardy-Venetia (Translated by W.E. Harryman). Paris 1933. p.78. (APS Library No. 67).

5 Next Hans Kolbe (1906-1982) for whom see Die Briefmarke 1958 (34) p.501 and 1982 (278) p.282. He accepted de Frank's basic principle of plate classification and did investigatory work especially into the mixed 'B' Plate of the 3 Kreuzer of 1850. Three works stem from his pen:-

5.1 Die Mischplatte 'B' der 3 Kreuzer. 1. Ausgabe (The Mixed Plate 'B' of the 3 Kreuzer. 1st Issue). Ein Jahrhundert österreichische Briefmarke. Festschrift. Vienna 1950. p.47 (translated in toto by J.F. Giblin and printed in AUSTRIA No. 16. pp.5-31).

5.3 Typen und Platten 1850. (Types and Plates 1850) (a series of well printed illustrative plates). Vienna 1952. pp.30.

6 The books from the pen of Karl Huber, an author of Linz, and his fellow workers, into the details of the 'First Austrian' issue, represent the modern research being performed within Austria itself. These may be listed as follows:-

6.1 (with J. Dirnberger) Spezial-Katalog Österreich 1850. Zusammstellung der Typen und Platten der 1. Ausgabe von Österreich mit Preisverseichnis (Specialised catalogue of 1850 Austria. Compilation of the types and plates of the 1st Issue of Austria with price listing). Hallein 1967. pp.43. (APS Library No. 4).

7 The 'specialised catalogue and handbook' of Dr. Ulrich Ferchenbauer (1940- ) has also come to be regarded as the standard Austrian work on the Imperial Period and as the modern successor to the books of Edwin Mueller. It has gone through various editions as follows:-

7.1 Österreich 1850-1867, Spezialkatalog und Handbuch. Vienna 1971. pp.224. (Reviewed in AUSTRIA No. 22. p.47).

7.2 Österreich 1850-1940, Spezialkatalog und Handbuch. Vienna 1974. pp.360.

7.5 Österreich 1850-1918, Spezialkatalog und Handbuch. Vienna 1990. pp.789. (Reviewed in AUSTRIA No. 96 pp21-22.)

8 It is of interest to note in this context a pioneer catalogue by V  Weinert which was the basis for much of Edwin Mueller's compilations:-

8.1 Donaupost Katalog 1921. Handbuch der Postwertzeichen Österreich-Ungarns und Nachfolgestaaten (Danube Postal Catalogue 1921, Handbook Of the Postage Stamps of Austria-Hungary and Of the Successor States). Bratislava 1921. pp.224.

9 A successor to Edwin Mueller specifically in the field of the listing of cancellations was Wilhelm Klein, a Postal Official, with his great work

9.1 Die postalischen Abstempelungen und andere Entwertungsarten auf den österreichen Postwertzeichen-Ausgaben 1867, 1883 und 1890 (The postal cancellations and other cancellations on the Austrian postage stamp issues of 1867, 1883 and 1890). This is in two volumes:-

9.1.1 Erster Band: Die regulären Poststempel der stabilen Ortspostämter in der österreichischen Reichshälfte (The regular postal cancellations of the static post offices in the Austrian half of the Empire). Vienna 1967. pp.487. (Reviewed in AUSTRIA No. 14. pp.44-48 and No. 18. pp.15-17). (APS Library No. 31 A).

9.1.2 Zweiter Band: Die weiteren Poststempel und Entwertungsarten in der österreichischen Reichshälfte (The other postal cancellations and types of cancellation in the Austrian half of the Empire). Vienna 1973. pp.318. (Reviewed in AUSTRIA No. 27. pp.25-26 and No. 31. pp.8-9). (APS Library No. 31 B).

10 An even more specific field of cancellations, those of Bohemia, was covered by Emil Votocek who wrote, in both German and Czech, as Volumes 13 and 14 of the 'Monograph of Czech Philately.'

10.1 Volume 13 (DIL XIII): Ceska postovni razitka od nejstarsich dob do ruku 1918 / Die bohmischen Poststempel von den altesten Zeiten bis 1918. (The Czech postal cancellations from the oldest period up to 1918). Praha 1975. pp.588. (A translation, by R. Howard, of the introduction into English was published by the Czech P.S. of G.B. Bulletin No. 9. December 1977. pp.32+ 8). This first volume goes from 1 Aberthan to 1730 Oubenitz. (APS Library No. 46).

10.2 Volume 14 (DIL XIV). ibid. Praha 1978. pp.687. The second volume goes from 1731 Paclawitz to 2798 Zwulla (p.314). It is completed with newspaper strikes, money order strikes, registration strikes, T.P.O.s, F.P.0.s cancellations etc. (Reviewed in AUSTRIA No. 36. pp.37-38).

11 Major (rtd.) Anton Clement (1913-1967), whose obituary is given in Die Briefmarke 1967 (15). (102/3). p.252, was specially concerned with military mail, presumably inspired by his service with the German Army during the Second World War. From his pen came:-

Appendix: Lombardy-Venetia

Back to top Jump to First Republic

Most of the monographs devoted to the first issues of Austria also deal with those issues modified as to currency for use in Lombardy-Venetia. However, although many catalogues, such as Gibbons, Michel, Mueller and Netto, also place the stamps of Lombardy-Venetia next to those of Austria, it is arguable that, for reasons of history and geography, language and currency, they should really be considered amongst those of the Italian States. Thus:-

A 1 Oliva G.: I Francoboli D'Italia. Volume 1. Antichi Stati Italiani (The Stamps of Italy. Volume 1. Old Italian States). Genoa 1950. (X. Editime) pp.204, devotes pp.37-74 to 'Regno Lombardo Veneto' (APS Library No. 70).

A 2 Sassone: Catalogo dei Francobolli degli Antichi Stati Italiani (Catalogue of the Stamps of the Old Italian States), follows the same practice.

The great bibliography of works on Lombardy-Venetia (774 references up to 1973) is given by:-

A 3 Salierno V. on pp.213-333 of 'Storia Postale' (Postal History) Milan 1974. Volume 1. pp.335.

The Italian Philatelic Encyclopedia also considers Lombardy-Venetia as an Italian State in:-

A 4 Associazone Torinese di Filatelia: Enciclopedia Filatelica Italiana Antichi Stati Italiana I. Regno Lombardo-Veneto (Italian Philatelic Encyclopedia of Old Italian States I. Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia). Florence 1968. pp.98 including 21 pages of illustrations and a bibliography.

However it may be of importance to note, in the pre-philatelic field: -

A 5 Kleb A. and Kumpf-Mikuli A.: Katalog der vorphilatelischen Poststempel von Lombardei-Venetien (Catalogue of the Pre-philatelic postal cancellations of Lombardy-Venetia). Vienna-Saro 1934/36.

A 6 Banci A.: Catalogo Prefilaticato e Poste delle Corriere e Post del Lombardo-Veneto (Pre-philatelic Catalogue and Post Routes of the Post of Lombardy-Venetia). Rome 1942. pp.174.

A 7 Vollmeier P.: Catalogo dei Bolli Postali del Territorio Lombardo-Veneto dalle Origini all'Introduzione del Francobollo (Catalogue of the Postal Markings of the Territory of Lombardy- Venetia from the origins to the introduction of the adhesive stamp). Milan 1979. pp.389. (Revieued in AUSTRIA No. 73. p.34).

Thence the next logical step is the philatelic period:-

A 8 Landmans G. and Guttmann E.: Annullamenti del Lombardo-Veneto (Cancellations of Lombardy-Venetia). Milan 1952. pp.68.

A 9 Sassone: Annullamenti del Lombardo-Veneto (Cancellations of Lombardy-Venetia). 1972.

A 10 Avi H.: Lombardo-Veneto 1854-1858. Le Marche da Bollo Usate per Posta Annullamenti-Affrancature, Die postalische Verwendung der Stempelmarken Abstempelungen-Frankaturen (The postal use of Revenue Stamps, Cancellations, Frankings) 1985. pp.450 (+ 300 reproductions).

A 11 Billig F.: Lombardy Venetia Stamps and Cancellations (Volume 4 of Billig's Handbooks on Cancellations. New York. 2nd revised edition. 1960. pp.48.

A 12 Alianello: Annullamenti del Lombardo-Veneto e del Levante Austriaco (Cancellations of Lombardy-Venetia; and the Austrian Levant).

A 13 Zanetti: Lombardo-Veneto (1850-66), Levante-Austriaco (l863-83) Annullamenti (Lombardy-Venetia (1850-66), Austrian Levant (1863-83). Cancellations) .

The subject of postal forgeries has been treated by Oliva (A 1) under the heading 'Falsi dell' Epoca' (p.47) and also in other works such as Müller (2.3, p.61). The subject of philatelic forgeries to deceive the collector has also been considered by:-

A 14 Stiedl C.E. and Billig F.: 'Lombardei-Venetien' Issue No. 26 in Billig's 'Grosses Handbuch der Faelschungen' (Billigs Large Handbook of the Forgeries: Lombardy-Venetia).

Bibliography for the First Republic

Introduction

Compared with the great corpus of literature on the Imperial Period of Austria, very little has been written, either generally or philatelically, about the First Republic. The following list is given as a nucleus of a detailed bibliography. However, the field is vast, even if confined solely to works in the English language, so it has been thought sensible to confine such a listing to part of the subject.
