Post Offices Of Former Austrian Territories

This edition was prepared by A Taylor in 1992 because the original manuscript was becoming fragile. The opportunity was taken to incorporate the additions and corrections as noted in the Library's extracts from the ASCGB Bulletin, which seem to be dated 1958. The list is now given twice, first in placename order, then in province/placename order split by provinces. The originals covered the following areas:

PART 1, written by K Kohler (undated): 'List of Austrian Cancellations for the Polish part of the Austrian Hungarian Empire, on Austrian stamps during the period 1850-1880' and lists for Bohemia, Hungary and Moravia/Silesia.

PART 2, written by K Tranmer, 1957: Section 1: Italy (Lombardy, Venetia and Mantua); Section 2: Austrian Post Offices in the Levant; Section 3: Bosnia & Herzgovina

PART 3, written by H A Eisenstein of Chicago, 1957: List of places formerly in Austria and (in 1957) in Yugoslavia. Bosnia, Herzgovina, Serbia and Montenegro are excluded

Appendix: Cross-reference list of Austrian, Italian & Yugoslavian names for places that changed hands once - or twice! - in Sud-Tirol and Kustenland.

Cross-references of the type 'A see B ... B see A' have been removed; variant spellings kept. No attempt has been made to cross-check the information with reference books or maps, nor to add accents and umlauts. The abbreviation 'B.H.' for Bahnhof has been left wherever it was used. In Hungarian names, where there were duplicate entries beginning 'V.', 'N.', and 'Sz', these have been deleted and the full versions with Vag, Nagy and Szent retained. Placenames followed by '(y)' are '1957 Yugoslavian'. Most of the place-names are also found with bilingual cancels: old form - dash - new form (eg AGRAM; ZAGREB; AGRAM-ZAGREB); these have been omitted from the list. Odd-looking spellings from the original have been retained, there being no basis for changing them. A few entries 'von X' have been removed as it only means 'from X'. Money order cancels from X often appear as GELDANW.. X or GELD..X - these have also been removed.

Warning! A considerable number of the entries are now thought to be wrong. Use these lists at your own risk! The APS intends to replace all of them with a better version, hopefully in 2009.
