Martin Brumby's book builds on the pioneering work of Edwin Müller, Ing. Wilhelm Klein, Dr. Rüdiger Wurth and others to present a complete listing of the Post Offices and all the known Postmarks of the Kingdom of Dalmatia up to the end of the Habsburg Empire in 1918. Provisional use of the old Austrian postmarks by the Successor States of Italy and Jugoslavia is also included.
The book is A4 size, "Perfect" bound, 192pp with numerous monochrome and several colour illustrations. Two A4 and one A3 size maps are included and the location of every office is shown. The book features listings of all the various types of postmarks employed at different times, a complete index with cross reference of Italian and Croatian names, listings of Railway and Maritime Travelling Post Offices operating in Dalmatia, Military markings, Censor markings, Official seals, cachets and much besides. A guide to scarcity and statistical information is also given.
By kind permission of Dr. Rüdiger Wurth, the book also includes a translated version of a long article on the development of the posts in Dalmatia. This originally appeared (in German) in the 1984 Österreichisches Jahrbuch für Postgeschichte und Philatelie, and includes dramatic contemporary accounts of the endless difficulties and obstructions which confronted the early Austrian Postal Officials in their attempts to introduce a postal service on 'modern' Austrian lines in the wild and undeveloped country.
Research into Postal History is never complete, and purchasers will also receive a free copy of the First Supplement that lists discoveries made after the book was published.
